INDEPENDENCE - Truman's Own, the legendary field artillery battery once lead by Pres. Harry S. Truman, recently changed commanders.

1st Lt. Matthew Martz, of St. Joseph, took command of Missouri National Guard's Battery D, 1-129th Field Artillery from Capt. Shannon D. Holaday, of Bolckow, during a change of command ceremony in January at the Independence National Guard Armory.

"It's really an honor to take command of such a historical unit," said Martz.

Martz has served with the National Guard for 22 years. For the past 10 years he has also been in the role of principal at Skaith Elementary School in St. Joseph.

Though this is not the first command position for Martz, it is his first time commanding a firing battery. Martz comes to Independence from Headquarters and Headquarters Battery in Maryville where he served as commander.

"The goal for our unit is to maintain our fine record we have established, but also to set a few goals of our own, continuing to drive forward," said Martz. "We are looking to continue to grow leaders for the military. There are plenty of Soldiers here that have the potential of stepping up into leadership roles. My own personal goal is to try to build and grow leaders for tomorrow, because if we're not doing that we're not serving the country the best that we can."
