JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Bryan Rex Hornsby, of Independence, was recently commissioned as a first lieutenant in the Missouri Army National Guard.

Maj. Gen. Stephen L. Danner, the adjutant general of the Missouri National Guard, administered the oath to three new officers at the Ike Skelton Training Site in Jefferson City.

"You have embarked on a new chapter in your life that I hope you will find as fulfilling as all of those who are here today. We want to welcome you to the Missouri National Guard and look forward to your years of service," said Danner.

Hornsby will serve as a chaplain with the 203rd Engineer Battalion of Joplin.

After receiving a newspaper clipping of the St. Joseph paper stating the need for chaplains within the Missouri National Guard from his grandfather, Hornsby felt the desire to enlist.

A graduate of Liberty High School, Hornsby graduated in 2009 from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City with a master's in divinity.

Hornsby is supported in his decision to join the Guard by his wife, Cassandra; children, Alexander and Chloe; and his parents, Lonnie Hornsby and Sheila Johnson.

"I would like to thank my wife and family members for supporting me in this service to God and country," said Hornsby.
