JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - April is the Month of the Military Child and was designed to recognize the sacrifices and applaud the courage of military children. Missourians will have the opportunity throughout the month to recognize and honor the children of Missouri National Guardsmen for their sacrifices and challenges they endure as their parents protect our state and nation as well as provide humanitarian relief around the world.

Missouri Gov. Jeremiah "Jay" Nixon paid tribute to military children by signing the Month of the Military Child proclamation. The proclamation acknowledges the military child as a source of pride to Missourians and underscores the important role military children play in our communities as they continue to show courage and resiliency when offering unconditional support to our Troops.

In celebration of the military child's spirit, the Missouri National Guard's Family Warrior Support group has scheduled events and activities throughout the month of April.

The Missouri National Guard first-ever Youth Symposium will be held April 13-16 in St. Louis at the Hilton Ball Park Inn. The symposium is for Missouri National Guard children ages 6-18 and their parents. More than 100 Missouri families are slated to attend the symposium which is being held in conjunction with the Missouri National Guard's State Family Program Volunteer Conference, an annual event for adults.

"The Month of the Military Child recognizes military youth who have 'served too," said Abigail Rolbiecki, child and youth coordinator for the Missouri National Guard's Family Warrior Support Division.

Family Program Director, Maj. Gregory Sampson, said the symposium is designed to revitalize and showcase the Guard's program for military children.

Other activities include a banquet and dance to recognize youths who have outstanding leadership abilities; a chance to attend a Royals baseball game; and an opportunity to learn survival skills at summer camp held at Whiteman Air Force Base.

"Our events and activities are focused on celebrating being a military child," said Rolbiecki.
