LEXINGTON, Mo. - Standing in front of his unit and with his Family, Steven Carter, of Clinton, was promoted to captain with the Missouri Army National Guard on April 1.

This is the second big milestone for Carter in less than a year's time. In September he took his first command position with Headquarters Detachment, 311th Brigade Support Battalion at the Lexington armory and oversees more than 60 Soldiers within the unit.

"This new rank is a greater responsibility and has more accountability," said Carter. "Expectations are higher with each new rank."

The event was even more significant for Carter because his 10-year-old son, Logan, pinned on his new rank.

"It meant the world to me," said Carter. "Logan pinned me as a newly commissioned officer and the only reason he didn't pin me for first lieutenant is because I was deployed. I hope he can pin me on any promotions I have in the future."

Carter has been a Citizen-Soldier for six years. Prior to the National Guard, Carter also served in the active-duty Army. In 2007-2008 he deployed in support of Kosovo Force 9 where he was a targeting officer in the analysis and control element.

Currently Carter is the fulltime human resource supervisor for the 311th BSB in Lexington. He is supported by his wife, Tara, and three children, Logan, Mikiah and Eli.
