Missouri National Guard Soldier killed in Afghanistan

Missouri Army National Guard Sgt. Denis D. Kisseloff, 45, of Saint Charles, Mo., died May 14 at Forward Operating Base Shank, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using rocket propelled grenade and small arms fires. He was assigned to the 1141st Engineer Company (Sapper), Kansas City, Mo.

"I join the entire Missouri National Guard in deep sadness over the loss of Sgt. Denis Kisseloff," said Brig. Gen. Stephen L. Danner, adjutant general for the Missouri National Guard. "Right now we ask that everyone keep his Family in their prayers during this difficult time."

"Sgt. Kisseloff bravely served his state and his country in both Afghanistan and Iraq, and we mourn the loss of this courageous soldier," Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon said. "The thoughts and prayers of the First Lady and I are with his loved ones."

Kisseloff began his military service with the Marine Corps in 1981. After serving with Marine Corps, he was a member of the Marine Corps Reserves until July 1988. Kisseloff joined the Missouri National Guard in April 2007. While in the Missouri National Guard, he was a member of the 1138th Engineer Company (Sapper), in Farmington; Headquarters Company, 203rd Engineer Company, in Joplin; and most recently with the 1141st. He previously mobilized to Iraq from July 2007 - August 2008, with the 1138th. Kisseloff deployed as a specialist and was posthumously promoted to the rank of sergeant.

His military awards include: the Marine Corps Meritorious Mast (4th award); Army Commendation Medal (2nd award); Army Good Conduct Medal; Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Iraq Campaign Medal with Campaign Star; Overseas Service Ribbon; Armed Forces Reserve Medal with M Device; Driver and Mechanic Badge with Wheeled Vehicle(s) Clasp; and a Combat Action Badge.
