KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Missouri Army National Guard's 205th Area Support Medical Company recently had a change in leadership at the Kansas City armory. Maj. Douglas Crandall, of St. Louis, relinquished his command of the unit July 7, to Capt. Eric Dier, of Russellville, during their change of command ceremony.
"The 205th was my first command and it really was a pleasure being their commander," said Crandall. "I couldn't ask for a better command."
Highlights for Crandall include the medical readiness training exercise his unit participated in while in the Dominican Republic.
"It was a great experience for the medics and myself," said Crandall. "It really made us appreciate the things we have at home and not take our good fortunes for granted."
Crandall is a nurse at the Veteran Affairs St. Louis Health Care System. He has served as a Citizen-Soldier for 19 years and also spent five years in the Navy as a corpsman. He now plans to pursue a higher level nursing degree and continue working with Wounded Warriors either locally or at one of the military hospitals and clinics abroad.
"I'm always going to be working with Soldiers because I was one and I really appreciate the sacrifices our Soldiers endure," said Crandall. "This is the least I can do to give back to our military community."
As the new and first-time commander, Dier is looking forward to this position and he said he is excited to inherit such a strong unit.
"I look forward to, and I am honored to, command the 205th ASMC," said Dier. "I have heard nothing but great things. I have no doubt that they will all continue to do great things and give me their best efforts each and every day."
Dier is a specialty branch officer strength manager for the Missouri National Guard who recruits medical professionals, lawyers and chaplains. He enlisted in 2006.
