GULF PORT, Miss. - Missouri Army National Guardsmen of the Hannibal-based 2175th Military Police Company are back on U.S. soil after a year-long deployment to the Middle East.
About 130 soldiers of the 2175th arrived at Camp Shelby, Miss. Sunday morning and are slated to return to Hannibal Aug. 25 for a welcome home ceremony at Caveman/Clemens Field. Details of the ceremony are still pending.
The 2175th was part of a base security deployment to Qatar in support of Operation Enduring Freedom involving more than 400 Missouri Guardsmen under the command and control of the 175th Military Police Battalion, based in Columbia. Other units on the deployment included the 1137th Military Police Company, headquartered in Kennett and the 3175th Chemical Company, based in St. Louis. In addition, the Fulton-based 1140th Military Police Company and the Warrenton-based 3175th Military Police Company each provided about two dozen soldiers to supplement the deployment.
Qatar serves as a central staging and recreation area for all U.S. Troops in the Middle East.
While deployed, Soldiers of the 2175th provided base security at Camp As Sayliyah, near the capitol city of Doha, as well as at "a remote site with austere conditions." In addition to providing military police for a quick reaction force, for roving patrols and maintaining sentry posts, the Soldiers were able to participate in additional training both in Qatar and nearby Kuwait.
Those training opportunities included courses in advanced cardiac life support, warrior leadership, antiterrorism, radio communications, Marine Corps martial arts, threat awareness, and suicide prevention, just to name a few.
The 2175th is commanded by Capt. Shane Spellman, of Columbia. The unit's executive officer is 1st Lt. John R. Bodkins, of Hallsville. The unit first sergeant is 1st Sgt. Bobby G. Richards, of Dysart.
