Avila enlists in Missouri Army National Guard

ST. JOSEPH - Catherine Avila, of St. Joseph, recently enlisted in the Missouri Army National Guard and will serve with the 1128th Forward Support Co. in Marshall. She currently drills in St. Joseph with the Area 1 Recruit Sustainment Program.
In November, Avila will attend basic training at Fort Leonard Wood and will later receive instruction for her military occupational specialty as a quartermaster and chemical equipment repairer.
"I wanted more adventure in my life," said Avila. "In the National Guard, I can be someone my kids can look up to."
Upon enlistment, Avila will earn over $500 a month in GI Bill benefits plus 100 percent college tuition assistance. She was recruited by Sgt. 1st Class Charles Wood out of the St. Joseph recruiting office.
Avila is a 2001 graduate of Maryville High School and is employed by Triumph foods in St. Joseph. She is supported by her children, Adelita and Jacqueline.
