ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Christopher Petty, of St. Joseph, recently enlisted in the Missouri Army National Guard and will serve with the 1135th Engineer Company (Clearance) in Richmond, one of three newly formed engineer units in the state.
The new engineer company includes 148 new positions primarily for combat engineers whose mission is to clear roadways allowing Soldiers to freely move within their area of operation. This mission is one of the most in demand missions overseas right now.
"In my career I hope to gain lots of new knowledge about many different types of skills, as well as becoming a better person," said Petty. "I believe what I will enjoy most about the National Guard is the chance to meet new people and learn from them."
Petty will report to Fort Leonard Wood for basic training in July 2012. Immediately following he will receive instruction for his military occupational specialty as a combat engineer.
As a Guardsman, Petty is eligible for 100 percent college tuition assistance. He will earn $345 a month in GI Bill benefits and, due to his critical skills as a combat engineer, he will receive an additional GI Bill kicker of $200 a month. Petty also qualified for a $15,000 enlistment bonus because of his qualifications and for joining the new engineer unit.
Petty is a senior at Central High School. He is the son of Teresa and Steven Petty of St. Joseph.
Petty was recruited by Sgt. 1st Class Jordan Bennett out of the St. Joseph recruiting office.
