JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Lt. Col. Steven Brooks, of Columbia, has been named the Missouri National Guard’s new state equal employment manager.

In his new position, Brooks heads up the Missouri National Guard’s equal employment office. The office ensures that the Guard adheres to the policies laid down by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission as well as the National Guard Bureau. In doing so, he helps the Guard maintain a fair working environment.

“The thing we can strive for is to have a diverse environment,” he said. “There is always room for improvement, but we’re on the right track.”

Brooks reports directly to the adjutant general and the human resource office on equal opportunity issues. The office handles the different guidelines that dictate military and technician positions, prepares equal employment opportunity reports and prepares an annual statistical report. The office also deals with any complaints that may come up.

“Our job here is to make sure all parties involved are aware of their rights,” Brooks said.

Before taking the position, Brooks served as the state safety officer. He also served as the equal opportunity advisor for the Missouri National Guard’s headquarters detachment, and has also gone through the Equal Opportunity Advisor Course.

“I’ve had a lot of education,” he said. “The experience has come at the unit level.”

One of the projects Brooks is currently handling is the creation of a state diversity council, which would help to interpret the adjutant general’s vision and put it into practice. The council would be made up of representatives from every senior command and air wing in the Missouri National Guard.

Brooks took the position on Oct. 11, replacing Lt. Col. Nancy Jones. He has met with Jones several times and has gone through many old equal employment opportunity reports. He said he has been fortunate that he was able to move into his new role while the office was in a period of relative calm. Brooks said he looks forward to serving the Missouri National Guard in his new role.

“I’m very happy for the opportunity to do this,” he said. “I’m really looking forward to serving the Missouri National Guard and the adjutant general in this capacity.”
